Living well with osteoporosis has two aspects: slowing the progression of bone loss and minimizing the risk of falls.
Slowing the progression of osteoporosis involves strategies to improve bone density, the same steps as in preventing osteoporosis.

Slowing the progression of osteoporosis
- Ensure you eat a healthy diet with enough calcium and protein.
- Get enough Vitamin D. The amount of sun exposure varies depends on where you live, the time of day and how much of your skin is exposed. Some foods contain Vitamin D, including oily fish, mushrooms and fortified dairy foods or juices.
- Keep active! Take regular weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercise.
- Avoid smoking and heavy drinking.
- Be aware of your risk factors and get an early diagnosis and treatment if needed.
Falls prevention
Falls prevention
In people with osteoporosis, falls often result in fractures. Some simple measures can reduce the risk of falls.
- Fall-proof your home by removing hazards, such as objects you could trip over. Keep your house well lit. Install handrails in bathrooms and non-skid mats. Install grab bars.
- Do exercises to improve balance as well as strength.
- Keep your glasses clean and wear sunglasses on sunny days.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good support, a broad heel and non-slip soles.
- Maintain a nutritious protein-rich diet.
- Check with your doctor whether your medications may increase the risk of falls.
